Cricket Bat Mantra

Yet another Cherrywood composition, my wasn’t he creatively prolific?

The Mantra was born from something Cherrywood had experienced, at his alma mater Wandsworth.

The song was dedicated to ‘Jock Small’ a Scottish form master who was tasked one day with supervising a cricket match.

Unfortunately, ‘Jock’ saw himself as an uncompromising highlander, a leader of men, the boys viewed him as a weak, figure of fun with a comedy accent.

The lyrics are a direct quote from one of his outbursts although the song fires off into a fantastical, metaphysical, unearthly and paranormal Caledonian fantasy centering around the legend of Black Hamish and the unnamed spirits.

The more musically inclined amongst you will be entranced by the tempo changes and brilliant sound effects!

The theme develops into a chant which becomes a tantric ‘round’. thereby invoking ancient spirits, the theme changes to a ghost story and, shiver me timbers, scare one shitless until the rhythms of 20th Century Jock appear, egged on by with modern R&B influences. The message being that fear and ancient loathing and superstition can be neutered with a modern love of ‘Browns’  (or Blues if you prefer) music.
